Zebedy Sings for You, The Man I Love & the Supreme Court

Today, June 26, 2015, is a remarkable date in the history of the United States. The Supreme Court ruled that no state can ban same sex marriages. Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote, "No longer may this liberty be denied.” This is now the rule of the land. I won't equate it to the many other important dates in our history; I don't need to.

What a mind blower!

Ok, so now what do I do? Well, as I usually do, I had to commemorate this day with one of the albums from my vinyl record collection. But I have so many albums dealing with gay comedy, protest, etc. to choose from. What and which one should I use? I finally decided this was not a day for comedy or protest but exaltation of joy and love. So, I chose Love. And what could be a better gay anthem than, The Man I Love. And no man ever sang it better than, Zebedy Colt, aka, Sebedy (link to song on YouTube below).

Zebedy was born Edward Earle Marsh on December 20, 1929. He was an American actor, musician, adult film director and star. He is principally known by his stage name Zebedy Colt.

Zebedy began his wild and fascinating showbiz career in childhood, acting occasionally for projects in Hollywood. His slant toward a less mainstream brand of performing began to manifest during the 1960s when he was involved in a number of outrageous, high-camp stage projects at supper clubs, bars and cafés catering to a primarily gay audience. Subsequently, he sang on an LP with the London Philharmonic Orchestra entitled "I'll Sing For You" and used the name Zebedy Colt. This pioneer album (now a rare collector's item) is historically significant to the gay community, as the songs were torchy standards about men, intended to be sung by women.

Now established as "Zebedy Colt", Marsh found entrance into the burgeoning world of hard-X cinema. The years that followed saw him as a performer and director, credited with many titles now both notorious and revered by the cult cinema fringe for their edgy and extreme subject matter.

Gay Power ~ 1970

During these years he also managed to find the time to perform on the stage in several on- and off-Broadway productions, and eventually retired to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he died in 2004, a little over eleven years before the realization of his dream came true; to be able to proudly proclaim to the world about, The Man I Love.

Someday he'll come along, The man I love
And he'll be big and strong, The man I love
And when he comes my way
I'll do my best to make him stay

He'll look at me and smile, I'll understand
Then in a little while, He'll take my hand
And though it seems absurd
I know we both won't say a word

Maybe I shall meet him Sunday,
Maybe Monday, maybe not
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day

He'll build a little home, That's meant for two
From which I'll never roam, Who would, would you
And so all else above
I'm dreaming of the man I love

Maybe I shall meet him Sunday,
Maybe Monday, maybe not
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day

He'll build a little home, That's meant for two
From which I'll never roam, Who would, would you
And so all else above
I'm waiting for the man I love

The Todd Rundgren radio show LP promo & the Putney VCS3

~ ~ ~

I've started this Vinyl LP series because I have a collection of over 20,000 vinyl record albums I am selling; each blog entry is about an album from my collection. Inquire for information here.

~ ~ ~

The Todd Rundgren Radio Show is a promotional LP that was issued by Bearsville Records in 1972 to promote the double album, Something/Anything?, by Tod Rundgren. It was Rundgren's third solo release, and was recorded the previous year in Los Angeles, New York City and Bearsville Studios, Woodstock. It is a wacky, rambling assemblage of music, sounds, voices and various sound effects, noises and whatever.  Oh, also, it's a hell of a lot of fun. There is a video of the album on YouTube (link below).

Rundgren recorded in his studio at home thus, was able to do more lengthy studio experiments, such as using a Putney VCS3 synthesizer

The Putney was introduced by the Electronic Music Studios in 1969 and designed by David Cockerell. The studio was formed in 1969 by Peter Zinovieff, Tristram Cary and Cockerell. It was developed in the basement of Zinovieff's house and was nicknamed "The Putney" after the London suburb where he was living.

The VCS3 consisted of 3 voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs), a noise generator, two input amplifiers, ring modulator, voltage-controlled low-pass filter, trapezoid envelope generator, voltage-controlled reverberation, level meter, two output amplifiers thus providing a stereo output, and a joystick providing 'X' and 'Y' modulation control.

There is a terrific video in which you can hear the sound of the Putney in action on the Synthtopia website (link below).

The album contains a promo letter . . .

Cal Tjader, Huracán on White Vinyl

Callen Radcliffe Tjader, Jr. died
on May 5, 1982.

He was better known as Cal Tjader.

It's true, I'm over a month late posting this tribute to him, it took me a while to get it together, but here it is.

Cal Tjader was an American Latin jazz musician, known as the most successful non-Latino Latin musician. He also explored various other jazz idioms but never abandoned the music of Cuba, the Caribbean, and Latin America, performing it until his death.

Huracán

This is a pretty special album in so many ways. First, it is a 12", 45 RPM record with only four songs on it. Second, it is a direct-to-disc album. Third, it is on White Vinyl.

Of course, the music is something special.

As with every album I have ever owned, there is always one track that is my very favorite. Tres Palabras is the one that makes it on this one. The song was written by Osvaldo Farrés, a Cuban Song writer. Farrés was born in 1903 in the small city of Quemado de Güines, Las Villas, Cuba. He was unable to read or write music but he became a prolific and world-renowned composer. He died in West New York, New Jersey, in 1985.

Tres Palabras has to be one of the most romantic and sappy songs ever, EVER written. It is spectacular! Everyone imaginable has played or sung it. There are lyrics to the song by Luis Miguel but on this album Tjader and his group do an instrumental interpretation of it that is out of this world. His vibraphone performance on it is sublime and the sax by Gary Foster is short but sweet (links to versions on YouTube below).

Other songs by Farrés include, Quizás, Quizás, Quizás, Acercate Mas, Toda Una Vida and his favorite, Madrecita, written in honor of his mother and sung to this day in Latin America on Mother's Day.

The album was issued on Crystal Clear Records, which the album says was made in San Francisco but I could find no info on the company. All I have to go on is the catalogue that came with the album.

Marilyn Monroe ~ Some Like It Hot soundtrack

vinyl LP album
photo of album by Styrous®

89 years ago today, on June 1, 1926, Norma Jeane Mortenson was born to Gladys Pearl Baker (née Monroe) at the Los Angeles County Hospital

On Thursday, February 23rd, 1956, Norma Jeane obtained an order from the City Court of the State of New York to legally change her name from Norma Jeane Mortenson to Marilyn Monroe.

As Marilyn Monroe, she made many films and I loved them all; but my two favorite movies of hers, one a drama the other a comedy, are Niagara . . .

Niagara ~ movie poster

. . . in which she is, according to the movie poster, " . . . a raging torrent of emotion that even nature can't control!"

WOW! . . .

. . . and Some Like It Hot

Double WOW!

Some Like It Hot movie poster

Monroe plays, Sugar "Kane" Kowalczyk, a singer who also plays a ukulele (a popular instrument in the '20's) in an all-girl band. Sugar is also a sucker for male sax players, whom she has sworn off because they have stolen her heart in the past and left her with "the fuzzy end of the lollipop".

Joe (Tony Curtis), a sax player, and Jerry (Jack Lemmon), who plays bass, are running away from a gangster (George Raft) so they hide out in drag as Josephine and Daphne with the girl orchestra. Needless to say, the situations are hysterical!

The action of the film takes place in the 1920's during prohibition with all the follies that came with it. Most of the music, of course, is from that era as well. The songs include: Runnin' Wild, Sugar Blues, Down Among the Sheltering Palms, By the Beautiful Sea, La Cumparsita, Sweet Sue, Just You, Sweet Georgia Brown, and, of course, the tune that defined that era, I Wanna Be Loved by You, brilliantly sung by Monroe.

Loved by You is my favorite cut from the album/film. Her version of the song is exquisite; she has all the sex combined with innocence that only Monroe could have carried across (links below to the song on YouTube).

I Wanna Be Loved by You was first performed in the 1928 Broadway musical, Good Boy, by Helen Kane, who became known as the 'Boop-Boop-a-Doop Girl' because of her baby-talk, scat-singing tag line to that song. It was recorded right when Kane's popularity started to reach its peak, and became her signature song.

 Helen Kane (August 4, 1904 – September 26, 1966)

However, Kane had swiped the "Boop" scat singing style from an African American performer by the name of "Baby Esther".

There were some pretty hefty lawsuits flying back and forth involving the three characters and they continue even to this day! Who owns Betty Boop?
